Jesse Gibson

Jesse Gibson is a Samoan artist, storyteller and musician from Otara, South Auckland. He creates art that explores the intersections of geometry, anthropology and biotechnology through an indigenous Pasifika lens. Originally a filmmaker, his exhibitions include Southversed 22 (@freshgalleryotara ) and Southversed 23 (@depotartspace ). Jesse works in a plethora of mediums as an exploration of different forms of creative expression.

From the artist:

My art often features uncanny humanoid forms performing minimum wage jobs. In my eyes, its a play on the idea that everyone you pass has a world of depth to them. Everyone's unique histories can make them alien and they take that form in my work. I think this uniqueness is kinda neat, and although "grotesque" I view each work as something of a natural beauty.
Come watch me get smoked (and make art in the process 🥰)

Shu

Shu secured a spot to compete after wowing our community Art Battle crowd as a wildcard entry. Fascinated with everything magical and dreamlike, Shu tends to infect pictures with sugary, sweet colors, escapism, and re-imaginations of nature. Shu’s art journey has mostly been focused on character design and illustration, finding most inspiration from cartoons, video games and nature (particularly animals).

From the artist:

Never stop dreaming!
