For the last 2 years Yared Nigussu has been the Art Battle National Champion, winning both the 2012, and 2013 National Championships against Canada’s best live painters. On July 26th, he will return to Toronto to defend his title in the biggest live painting competition in history to be held at the former Maple Leaf Gardens.
Yared is an internationally renowned artist based in Vancouver. The saturated use of colour and free-flowing movement in his work keeps the eye darting from one brush stroke to the next. On the secret to Yared’s performance, Art Battle Co-Founder Chris Pemberton says “When he is painting, it’s a dance. Each move is considered. He makes the hard things look easy, and easy things look hard.” With a wide range of subject matter from portraits to landscapes, the vibrant expression and drama in each piece is undeniable.
