Josue Betancourt
(1982- )
Biography
Jo Betancourt was born in Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic, in 1982. He graduated from high school at the school of plastic arts (fine arts) of Santo Domingo in 2000 and shortly after moved to that city to enroll in the advertising career at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), in 2009 he entered the high school of design of Chavon and attended the basic year, participating in several anonymous collective exhibitions.
Jo seeks to project situations and attitudes. Fruit of a usual vision. The culés end up being the main factor that leads the human being to an individualism and a lack when creating for ourselves. It uses real images by its own means, the reorientation of popular culture for personal expression. Celebrities, models and politicians are taken out of the panel and placed in a new space, devoid of the usual history. His paintings are not controlled by cartoon contexts. On the contrary, the figures of these portraits are reinvented through the artist's hand. His mixed technique, with the participation of layers of ink, spray and brush, on the same canvas. They allow their paintings to be simultaneously ethereal soft and at the same time have a shrill raw energy.
Jo has worked in some artistic collectives such as: arte amor 2011, colando alegría 2013
He currently lives in his hometown where he has his studio and teaches drawing classes of the human figure and art history at the school of visual arts (step) in that city.

the challenge
Inspired by the expressionists, Chaïm Soutine, Chagall, Modigliani etc., and by Catalan artists such as Dali, Miro et Tapiès, Laurent Lavaill’s ideological and artistic approach is also influenced by non-conformism. His work demonstrates how he lays his eyes on the soul or even the essence of people, melancholic portraits without any voice or likeness : his artistic method centres around imperfection.
